Lost All Your Car Keys? Here Is What To Do Next

It happens more often than you would think. You reach for your keys and they are simply gone. Not in your pocket, not on the hook by the door, not in yesterday's jeans. You have checked everywhere. You have zero working keys to your vehicle.

This is called an "all keys lost" situation, and it is one of the most common calls we get in Vancouver WA. Here is exactly what to do — and what not to do.

Step 1: Do Not Call a Tow Truck Yet

The instinct is to call a tow truck and have the car taken to the dealer. Resist that instinct. Here is why:

  • Towing adds time on top of the key replacement itself
  • Dealers often have a 1–5 day wait for key programming appointments
  • You will need a ride to and from the dealership

A qualified mobile locksmith can come to your location — your driveway, a parking lot, your workplace — and make new keys on-site. No tow required.

Step 2: Call a Mobile Locksmith

When you call, have this information ready:

  • Year, make, and model of the vehicle
  • VIN number (found on the dashboard near the windshield, or on your registration/insurance card)
  • Your location
  • Proof of ownership — registration, title, or insurance card in your name

The VIN is important for all-keys-lost jobs. It allows the locksmith to look up the key code and, in some cases, order the correct blank before arriving.

Step 3: Understand What Happens On-Site

Here is the process a locksmith uses for an all-keys-lost job:

Key Cutting

First, the locksmith decodes the lock or uses the VIN to determine the correct key cut. They cut a new blade on a code cutter or high-speed duplicator.

IMMO Programming

Modern vehicles have an immobilizer (IMMO) system that prevents the engine from starting with an unprogrammed key. For an all-keys-lost job, the locksmith must communicate directly with the vehicle's ECU to authorize the new key.

This typically involves:

  • Connecting a professional programmer (we use Autel and Lonsdor tools) to the OBD-II port
  • Performing an IMMO reset or PIN extraction
  • Programming the new key to the vehicle's ECU

On some vehicles, this process takes 15 minutes. On others — particularly newer models with advanced security — it can take 45–90 minutes.

Test and Verify

Once programmed, the locksmith tests the key: does it start the car? Do the remote functions work? Is the immobilizer light off? A good locksmith does not leave until everything is confirmed working.

How All-Keys-Lost Differs From Adding a Spare

All-keys-lost jobs are more involved than spare key programming because the locksmith must perform an IMMO reset or PIN extraction without any existing key to reference. The complexity depends on your vehicle's make, model, year, and key type.

Call us with your year, make, and model and we will give you an accurate quote over the phone before we arrive.

What If the Locksmith Cannot Program My Key?

This is rare but it does happen — typically on very new vehicles (current model year) with proprietary security systems, or certain European luxury brands. In those cases, the dealer may be the only option.

A reputable locksmith will tell you upfront if your vehicle is outside their capability.

Preventing It From Happening Again

Once you have a new key, get a spare made while the locksmith is already on-site. Having a second key made in the same visit is far less involved than starting from scratch later. Most people who call us for all-keys-lost jobs say they had a spare at some point but never replaced it after losing it.

Keep your spare somewhere separate from your primary key — a different bag, a drawer at home, with a trusted family member.
