When to Call an Expert
While some locksmith tasks may seem manageable, knowing when to call a professional is crucial:
When to Call an Expert:
- Simple Tasks: Changing batteries in a smart lock or replacing a door handle can often be done yourself.
- Complex Issues: Lockouts, rekeying, and advanced lock installations are best left to trained professionals to avoid damaging your locks.
- If it's something that your not familiar with, don't have the tools for, or aren't comfortable with... that's When to Call an Expert.
There are a number of other situations that may be too complex for the average renter or homeowner to tackle. Things like alignment issues, and adjusting the lock or strike plate location are a few more.
How do you know when to call an expert?
Here are a few more situations that you may need to call an expert Locksmith for:
Sagging Hinges
Resetting electronic lock codes
Some are straightforward, others... not so much.
Installing new locks
If your door is already prepped to receive a lock, or if you're just replacing one that's already present, you can usually accomplish this yourself.
Rekey new or existing locks
Installing a store bought Kwikset lock correctly, when it's prepped for a different door handing. For this situation, a tool that they call a "pickle-fork" is required and I've never seen one sold in a hardware store. Most locks should be installed so that the key goes in "cut side up." This is for uniformity, as well as longevity. The pins and springs should naturally rest with gravity, when the key isn't inserted. When it's upside down, gravity keeps the pins pressed against the springs and wears it out quicker.
